I almost agreed with Mr. Ford when I first read the above quote, but I quickly realized he missed a very important fact; ALL mankind is naturally selfish, arrogant, and greedy. It is the by-product of the unregenerate heart. Also known as, sinful nature.
Surely, I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Psalm 51:5
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23
Remember, money is just a form of exchange. With it, we can satisfy the desires of our hearts, which are inherently materialistic. That is why a TRUE spiritual conversion (rebirth) is needed to transform it. Of course, constant spiritual discipline is also imperative. If we are not careful, money can and will awaken the “old man.”
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
James 1:14
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Jeremiah 17:9
Paul’s charge to Timothy was for the church, which proves my point about discipline and vigilance.
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”
1 Timothy 6:17-19
Yes, even the most pious can succumb to the snares of money. Remember the rich young ruler? (Matthew 19:16-22). It’s not about being charitable or faithful with your religious “duties”. It is solely about having the right heart (motive).
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23
Would you be willing to let go of ALL your possessions (financial stability, acquired comforts) to answer God’s call? Or how about to meet the needs of a people? Before you answer, it would behoove you to echo David’s cry.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me for you know my thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23
There is a group (I am among them) that is anxious to have the current pandemic mask mandates terminated. But since most of us are all masked when it comes to money as well, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to get rid of that one first and commit to building our spiritual immunity against the self-serving virus?
Lord, unmask me!
Such truth! We constantly have to ask the Lord to ‘check our hearts” Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 KJV
