“But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.” – Luke 5:16
On Earth, a candle flame typically dances and stretches upward, forming a blue-to-white gradient teardrop shape. That’s because hot air rises and pulls cooler air from its base. However, in space or any other zero-gravity atmosphere, there is technically no “up,” so no hot air is rising. In addition, oxygen diffuses much more slowly and evenly around the flame, creating a low-temperature burn that turns the flame into a small, perfect blue sphere.
It’s amazing how nature offers us so many ways to alleviate the stresses of life and, most importantly, how it points us to the real source of all peace and comfort. From the breathtaking marvels of the cosmos to the peaceful wonders of our planet, there is always a place where we can all go to unburden ourselves. And, while a trip to the Grand Canyon or a space observatory may require some financing, stepping out to gaze at the night sky or sit under the shade of a tree on a park bench costs nothing more than the will to go.

Some people think mindfulness is a Buddhist, Eastern thing. They don’t realize how often Jesus Christ himself prioritized contemplation. In the New Testament, He frequently went away alone to pray, seeking solitude and time for communion with God. This practice is highlighted in various passages where he is described as withdrawing to lonely places, mountains, or hills to pray. These instances underscore the importance of solitude and prayer in his ministry and personal life.

No matter where you choose to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, all of creation declares the works of the only One who can grant us true peace and rest to our weary souls.
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.'” – Matthew 11:28
Like an erratic flame triggered by the natural gravity on Earth, sometimes we find ourselves pulled in every direction by life’s challenges. And, just like the lack of heat and wind in space can calm a raging flame, so does being in the supernatural zero-gravity presence of God. Friends, family, hobbies, and, in some cases, therapy and medicine can help us cope with some of the adversities we face in life. However, only God can grant us the emotional and spiritual calmness that is absent when we are stretched like a flame by the gravity of life.

Here are a few steps to help you find a zero-gravity place/time to calm down and recharge.
1. Eliminate External Distractions:
- Find a quiet space: Choose a place where you can be alone and free from interruptions, whether it’s a specific room, a corner, or even a short trip to a park.
- Silence your devices: Turn off phones, computers, and other devices that can lead to distractions.
- Turn down the music. Reduce or eliminate background noise, as it can make it harder to focus on God.
- Minimize physical distractions: Remove anything that might draw your attention away from your prayer or meditation.
2. Quiet Your Inner Thoughts:
- Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindful breathing or other practices that help you quiet your mind and bring your focus to the present moment.
- Meditate on Scripture: Reflect on a particular passage of Scripture, letting it sink in and guide your thoughts and prayers.
- Pray in Silence: Sometimes, simply sitting in God’s presence in silence, allowing Him to speak to you, can be a powerful experience.
Prayer: Gracious Lord, in times when the gravity of life brings uncertainty and fear, let your peace that transcends circumstances bring calmness to my soul. Help me trust in your plan and find security in your promises. Quiet my anxious thoughts and guard my mind and soul. I surrender my worries to you, knowing that in the zero gravity of your presence is where I find rest, reassurance, and hope. Amen.
Thanks for the reminder to give all my anxieties to my Loving Father who hears and sees all that is happening It was a calming moment to read this post.
